Have you noticed? At room temperature, Nutella gets hard as a rock.
So, by popular demand, I’m going to show you the 6 best ways to warm up Nutella.
And as a bonus — one slightly questionable method… but still worth knowing!
Table of Content
1/ Place the Nutella Jar Near the Crêpe Maker
Nutella's texture depends a lot on its temperature:
-
Below 30°C: almost unusable
-
30°C to 50°C: manageable
-
50°C to 60°C: ideal
-
Above 60°C: it starts cooking
The first instinct everyone has is to place the jar near the crêpe maker.
This method works — as long as the jar is placed level with the cooking plate, not next to the machine's base or frame.
Pros:
-
No equipment needed
-
No electricity required
Cons:
-
Very slow if the room is cold (and it only warms one side)
-
Low throughput, since you can’t heat many jars at once
-
You’ll have to pour using a rubber spatula or spoon
2/ Reheating in the Microwave
Simply remove the metal seal carefully, then heat for 90 seconds at 1000W (for a 1kg jar). Repeat every 90 minutes, as often as needed.
Pros:
-
Instant melting
-
Affordable (around €50)
-
Ideal when multiple cooking stations are running at once
Cons:
-
Bulky
-
Requires an electrical outlet
3/ Chocolate Warmer
Melt the Nutella in the microwave first, pour it into a squeeze bottle, then keep it warm at 60°C using the chocolate warmer.
Reminder: a chocolate warmer is dry heat, not a bain-marie.
Pros:
-
Clean, precise drizzle with the squeeze bottle
-
Can also be used for other toppings (salted caramel, honey, etc.)
Cons:
-
Expensive (€400 to €600)
-
Needs electricity
-
Hard to share across several cooking stations
4/ Nutella Dispenser
Works with 3kg jars from Ferrero Foodservice. Place the jar in the dispenser, wait at least 30 minutes, and press the pump.
Pros:
-
Neat, professional presentation
-
Perfect for high volumes
-
Portion control (each pump dispenses 15g)
Cons:
-
Expensive (€400 — but free for large Ferrero clients)
-
Requires electricity
-
30-minute warm-up time
-
Needs regular cleaning (with some Nutella loss)
-
Not ideal for use across multiple stations
5/ Bain-Marie
Place the Nutella jar in a pot filled with hot water, then set it on a crêpe maker or a gas burner (you can also use a fondue set).
Pros:
-
No special equipment needed
-
Doesn’t require electricity
Cons:
-
Ties up a crêpe maker for 10 minutes
-
Not suitable for high-volume service
6/ Fondue Set
Empty the jar into the fondue pot and heat. Serve using a spatula.
Pros:
-
Inexpensive
-
Great for dipping fruits or waffles
Cons:
-
Very messy
-
Requires electricity
-
Not practical to share across several cooking stations
Bonus Tip
In winter, around Paris, the crêpe vendors near the Eiffel Tower or the Champs-Élysées somehow serve liquid Nutella… without reheating it.
Let me explain this little miracle.
-
Heat a 1kg jar of Nutella in the microwave for 90 seconds.
-
Remove about one-third of the jar (approx. 330g).
-
Replace it with 200 to 250g of canola oil, almost to the top. Mix thoroughly.
Important notes:
-
Do not use olive oil (too strong in flavor).
-
Avoid peanut or sunflower oil — they tend to solidify in the cold.
With this "custom blend", Nutella kept at 4°C (fridge temperature) will have the same consistency as regular Nutella at 25°C, without any heating.
Why This Method Is… Debatable
It’s very effective — but it does raise two issues:
-
Is it still really Nutella? Or are you scamming your customers?
-
Nutritional value takes a hit — you're adding oil to a product that already contains 20% palm oil.
All of these methods are shown step-by-step in this YouTube video (French version).
